There are many seats along the lake walkway to stop and enjoy the abundant bird life and native bush. The walkway makes its way through some breathtaking lowland forest before heading deep into Rotokare's swamp forest. You will see the great swamp forest giants (Kahikatea and pukatea), notice their gnarly buttress roots.

It should take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the loop walk. The reserve is protected by a 8.2 km pest-proof fence. Entry is through a double set of gates. The gate has to close behind before you can open the next gate. Entry is free but donations to the trust are appreciated. Rotokare Scenic Reserve is at Sangster Road, 12 km from TKT work in partnership with Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust as the Taranaki Kohanga Kiwi at Rotokare (TKKR) and at any time their can be between 30-40 birds monitored in the reserve, growing a breeding population which is now providing kiwi to repopulate other sites, these birds are monitored by staff and volunteers from both organisations, a few of them are featured here. It is quite a trek to get to Lake Rotokare behind Eltham but it is certainly worth it.

The first 600 metres feature boardwalks around the wetlands, which include a boardwalk out to a floating viewing pontoon. The boardwalk up until the pontoon is wheelchair accessible, and many visitors only walk as far as the pontoon and then return. Rotokare Loop-da-Loop. Look out for native birds, such as bellbirds, tui, kereru, grey warbler, fernbird and spotless crake. You can use the seats dotted around the track for bird spotting or to simply be lazy we won’t judge.

Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust. Rotokare is a fenced pest-free forest reserve 12-kilometres east of Eltham, in south Taranaki. With a lake and wetlands, the scenic reserve has long been a popular recreation spot, and now also has a strong conservation focus.
